No Is a Beautiful Word Hope and Help for the Overcommitted and Occasionally Exhausted Kevin G Harney Gary Thomas 0025986586065 Books Reviews

  • I once heard a leader offer a piece of practical wisdom "When something big happens, there are three kinds of people. Those who make things happen. Those who watch things happen. And those who wonder, 'What the heck just happened.'"

In "No is a beautiful word," Kevin Harney really helps us understand what it takes to give our lives to things that matter most. We have to be willing to live life on purpose, not just let life happen. But Kevin goes way beyond the simplistic, self-help type books that try to convince us we are the masters of the universe. Anyone who has lived very long realizes that there are SO MANY things we can't control. He helps us understand the power we do have to be intentional with our time, energy and passion.

From a perspective of true faith, Kevin shares insights that anyone will be able to use. This is a book that will be at the top of my list as I continue raising up and mentoring leaders in my own work. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
  • It has been a challenge for me to make the time to read this book....but once I finally made it through the first few chapters and began to examine ways to apply what I was reading, that problem was easily overcome. Now I am choosing when to read how much. I want to pace myself to let this sink in as deeply as possible. It is already providing a foundation to finally reclaim the time I need to get to the things that matter the most.

This book is empowering and freeing. Whether you are a corporate executive, an over committed mom, or a juggling dad, the principles in this book - and the practical ways of approaching them (the Categories of Nos) - provide insight into how you can regain control of your life - and live it to the full!
  • A friend of mine who is a world-class designer explained to me that the first job of any good designer is to understand and adhere to the constraints surrounding any assignment. Once the constraints are clear, innovation and creativity can be unleashed. Kevin Harney understands that and in this very pragmatic book, he gives us a pathway to discern the right constraints for our lives in order to live well. If you want to experience the joy and freedom that comes from practicing good stewardship of the time and talents you already possess, you need to read this book. Read it, ponder it, practice it. You won't be sorry.
  • You will reap hours for every minute you invest reading this book. In that sense, you can't afford not to read it. The chapters fly by, but none of them will waste your time. They are laden with wisdom, biblical truth, and hard-won experience.
  • Kevin is right. Most of us are over committed. Our calendars and our lives are just too busy. Out of guilt, or obligation, or a misplaced sense of loyalty we’ve said yes when we should have said no. As Warren Buffett once said, “The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything.” Kevin would agree. In “No is a beautiful word,” he teaches us when, how, and why o say no. This is a book every busy person will want to read. Dr. Dann Stouten Author of "The Gate"
  • This book reclaims the power of the most underappreciated word in the English language. This is a training manual on how to focus your life and priorities on the things that matter most.
  • Harney did a fantastic job of bringing home his message - using many interesting short stories and anecdotes. This is a quick, yet provocative read.
  • Some books just feel like they were written just for me - this is one of them. I have a hard time saying no, and when I do I often don't do it very graciously. Kevin's book is easy to read, easy to digest, and - as I said - helpful. Love it.
